Derwent Valley Heritage Way
The Derwent Valley Heritage Way is a waymarked and well-maintained long distance walk along the River Derwent. It starts at Ladybower Reservoir in the north and follows the Derwent all the way, through Derby, to Shardlow in the south, where the Derwent joins the Trent, a total of 55 miles. A delightful and varied walk, the route takes in the beautiful scenery of the Derwent valley reservoirs, the White Peak and Chatsworth Hall in the north and the pretty rolling hills of the lower Derwent Valley in the south. It also gives you a chance to see the rich industrial heritage of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in places such as Cromford, Belper, Milford and Darley Abbey.
The Derwent Valley Trust produces a guidebook to accompany walkers, with detailed written instructions on how to follow the route on the ground, 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey strip maps, background information on the sights you will see, public transport links and local amenities. A brand-new 2023 Third Edition has just been published and can be purchased here for £15.00. All proceeds go to the Derwent Valley Trust, the charity which maintains the Derwent Valley Heritage Way.

The Ramblers' Don't Lose Your Way campaign has found 49,138 miles of rights of way missing from the definitive map in England and Wales, which it is now racing to save by 2026.
