Walk Diary Wednesday 9 August 2017 weather, fine.
Cromford Meadows Leader: Gerry White
No. on walk 17ish

Your usual chronicler being not present, you have me doing my usual Blog "light". i.e. a much shorter version but better than nothing at all. 17 or 18 of us met at Cromford Meadows, on a nice morning! It actually wasn't raining and stayed fine, if a little cool, for the rest of the day, very pleasant from the previous two Wednesday rain soaked walks. We set off over the River Derwent and passed Willersley Castle entrance, then on to the footpath that was when we realised how wet it was underfoot. After all it had rained for 24 hours previously only stopping a very short while before we set off. Along the side of the hill to Castle Top Farm, then, instead of taking our usual path to Lea and Smedley's mill, we turned sharp left and started to climb to the top of the ridge. Very muddy with large puddles along the way, followed by a lovely long way down the other side to cross a stream over some tricky stepping stones. Along the road and over the fields and we thought easily to Riber. No! We did a "Gerry type" loop which took us down the hill then straight up a very steep rocky and muddy path through Bracken and Heather which was now fully out. I think it is quite early for Heather but autumn plants are also out early this year. There were lots of Blackberries, Rowan berries, Golden Rod, Michaelmas Daisies and Wild Thyme. With the cool wind it did feel and look quite like autumn today. Lunch was on Riber Knoll with a lovely view of Cromford and Matlock below. Then a very steep and slippery descent into Cromford which was so muddy we were all slipping and sliding. But back to the wharf for a brew after a hard, but really lovely walk.
Jane Harlow.
