Diary Walk

Elton Church Depart 10 a.m. 6 ˝ miles Leader: Geoff Thrupp
Whilst I was
away, a group of ten walked out from Elton church - around the Elton area.
Good
scenery and excellent weather conditions made this birthday walk one to
remember.
Diary Walks 26
Friday 23rd to Monday 26th April 2010
Weather, Ideal.
Amber Valley Ramblers away weekend at Sedbergh,
38 members
travelled the 140 plus miles to this much under-rated part of
We all stayed at Thorns Hall, a former country house built in
the 16 c. and now, together with its out buildings,
forms a magnificent hotel run by H.F. Holidays. Because of our number, we had
sole occupancy, creating a good social atmosphere throughout the whole weekend.
The food and accommodation were excellent, and the manager and staff went out of
their way to make our stay with them a good one. We have no hesitation in
recommending this hotel to other walking groups.
There were seven different led
walks, of differing lengths and levels, the weather and visibility just right
for our needs. After dinner, the next day’s walks were planned and discussed,
the various leaders describing their walks and departure points and times. Many
of us enjoyed a drink and some light hearted quizzes
before retiring for an early night.
The weekend seemed to fly by, and soon we
were saying our good-byes, departing for our homes by various routes to enjoy
more of the rolling Yorkshire Dales.

The Howgills, an achievement for some.

You can just hear the water
falling, can’t you?

“Well I think it’s this way - or is it?”
Diary Walk 27
Ashover Village CP. Depart
10 a.m. 7
miles. Leader: Sue Glithero
After the
excitement of far away places, a more relaxing walk, or so we thought, going on
paths that we knew, but Sue had a few tricks up her sleeve, and it wasn’t long
before we were saying, “this is a new one” and “I don’t remember ever walking
here before”.
Eighteen took part in his very good walk, the weather again was
just right, the talk of the previous week-end faded as we encountered more new
arrivals on the flower front, Bluebells seem to be everywhere and beginning to
look their best, dandelions, honesty, and stitchwort making stunning appearances also.

Still more to come.
The star of the
day must be the three fledgling Song Thrushes in a small Ash tree. We stood and
marvelled at these superbly marked birds, so close that we almost dare not
move, two were able to fly, the third waited to have its picture taken and
watched us on our way.

‘They just flew away and left me here’.
Some testing hills before our lunch break
- with excellent
views over Brackenfield and Wessington before we set off through familiar
territory back to the delightful
